Who Are You?

June 12, 2008 · 1 Comment

I recently had lunch with my friend Julie Molner. Julie is also a life coach and author so our conversations are always interesting to me. During our visit, Julie commented that she often asks her clients, “Who are you?” I was struck by this question from the perspective of how I usually define myself. I often tell people I’m a feng shui expert, a life coach, an artist, etc. which tells people what I do. It really doesn’t say who I am.

Then I began wondering how do I answer that question without using references outside of myself. For example, instead of saying I am an artist, I might say I am creative with shapes, colors, and composition. Instead of saying I am a feng shui expert, I might say I am skilled at sensing energy, knowledgeable about models, and good at suggesting practical solutions . Instead of saying I am a life coach, I might say I am intuitive, a good listener, and a creative problem solver.

I could take this even further and answer the Who Are You question with I am statements. For example, I might say I am creative, I am intelligent, I am knowledgeable, I am kind, I am crabby (sometimes!!), etc. I could go even further and say I am harmony, I am peace, I am inspiration.

What I noticed in this little exercise is that I started out identifying myself as an individual and moved to the qualities of unity. And imagine what I could become “claiming” the qualities of unity as mine on a regular basis. Hmmm….some food for thought!

So, I ask you “Who Are You?”

The Importance of Laughing

June 5, 2008 · 1 Comment

Recently I attended a collage workshop in Northern Michigan. (see post dated May 29) The morning I was scheduled to leave, I received some very shocking news about someone dear to my husband and me. The news was so shocking, I had a very difficult time packing and pulling together the supplies I needed to bring. Once I got there and it was time to start working on our collages, I realized I didn’t bring the best assortment of images and materials. And like Tim Gunn of Project Runways says, “make it work”, I did just that. YouTube – Tim says Make it Work!

As I went through the photos I brought, I was inspired to use the heads of my pets. As soon as I laid their heads on my project, I started laughing. And laughing is what I really needed to do. Even though I was sad, I could still find joy….I was amazed. And, the laughing opened up a “channel” for me to be more creative than I otherwise might have been.

In my own experience I have found that laughing is very healing. I am blessed to be part of a family that loves to laugh and be silly. A truly blessed day is when I laugh at least once….which is almost every day. I recommend a regular dose of laughter to brighten your day and work those ab muscles!

By the way, here’s one of my finished collages from the workshop. Have a laugh on me!
